Glad to hear you are interested in community health! I have been a public health nurse for 16 years.

For starters, I guess I would need to clarify community health. There are actually 2 types - communtiy health and public health. Community health is more like home health nursing-taking care of the person as a whole. Public health is more like education of the public-taking care of the public as a whole. It is just they like to use the word "community health" interchangably to describe both.

It is very difficult for someone coming right out of nursing school to get this type of job in nursing. They usually like to have experinced nurses as a lot of the job is working independently.
However, there are many jobs out there for those interested in community health as the population is not staying in hospitals, rehabs or nursing homes like they use to so the need for home care is great. Not so with public health. If anything , these jobs are slowly disappearing as most of these jobs are government (federal, state, or local) and a lot of them can't afford to keep much staff due to decreases in grant moneys, tax moneys or most responsiblities are being done by the private sector (i.e. immunizations).

I hope that clarified a little bit. Feel free to ask more questions if I wasn't clear enough.
