New Grad Interested in Pediatric Nursing

Hello all! I am going to be graduating with my BSN in May and I have just started to look at some job postings to see what is out there. I am very interested in becoming a pediatric nurse, but many pediatric job postings require at least 1 year of RN experience. What are the thoughts on that? Is it worth pursuing one that doesn't require this? Or is a year of adult med-surg better for me to start with? I appreciate any thoughts...

I've been pause for a moment when reading you post for we had similar concern. it been 5 years since I was graduated in Nursing and the same matters we had on which particular division I should go into.

I think you should go for pediatric nursing, this field sure has a great future and good pay as well. healthcampus.com also offers nurses continuing education.

Check with the hospital where you did your pediatric clinical, they may be more willing to hire a new grad that has spent time on their units. Even if it says experience is preferred, apply. The worse thing that can happen is they don't call for an interview. Also, check to see if there are pediatric fellowships that would provide the training with others in your position. My rule of thumb: Work where you are happy. I love working with kids. Even if there are work environment stressors, liking what you are doing goes a long way in improving your outlook.

yeah do a year of adult med surg and transfer into pediatrics. the adult med surg experience would serve you well.

I went straight into Peds from nursing school and it was great. Still there 5 years later!

Exploring your career in pediatric nursing is very challenging and rewarding. Yes, many of the pediatrics job position require 1 year of RN experience. Experience matters in this field but this is not required for all job postings in this field; you can start as a fresher by searching the job postings updates on internet.

Just follow what you feel you are comfortable in doing. When you are not passionate about your work, it'll attract problems.

Many pediatric hospitals will hire new grads and train them, sometimes with longer orientation periods, and working with the GN program to ensure the new grad is doing well. Smaller hospitals with just a pediatric floor may require the experience. I have been a pediatric nurse for 6 years and have trained many new grads who have become fantastic nurses. Good luck! =)
