Hi- I took a job as a pre-op/PACU nurse about 9 months ago at a small brand new ASC. The OR nurse quit and the position has remained unfilled so my boss filled in temporarily and now I am being trained by him for the position.HOwever, my boss is not primarily an OR nurse. I am being trained by a nurse who lacks the necessary OR experience to fully orient me to OR nursing. I am excited for the opportunity to be an OR nurse but I want to make sure I have the proper training and education. CAn you recommend resources for learning more about being an OR nurse and if anyone in the Northern NJ area is willing to be a sort of mentor for me Id really appreciate it I would love to be able to ask questions and get advice from a local experienced OR nurse. Thanks- V
Hi V....I also feel I had an ineffective orientation since I was thrown into so many things in the beginning that my head was spinning. I have been an OR nurse in northern NJ for over 25 yrs and can give you lots of good advice. There is a periop 101 course that may help you learn, however, I am not sure where it is offered or how long it lasts. You can certainly find it on the internet. I believe nurses should go through an internship like medical residents and have mentors. If you would like, you can respond to my email with any questions... Xenablueyes@aol.com. I would be happy to answer. Just mention Nurse.com post in the header. Best of luck to you......T.
