    Default Career Change? Happy Nurses?

Hi! I am hoping to get advice form someone that is an RN because asking family and friends isn't really helping. I have toyed with the idea to go back to school although I already have my bachelors degree in another study I have always regretted not going to nursing school. I have met with advisors and I have my plan set out but I need to know is it worth it? I only ask because I have read some not so happy people via internet forums and they paint a picture that is not pretty. I know with all things there are hardships but are there any happy nurses out there?!?! I feel like I am at a crossroads. Thanks for the advice!

You're going get different opinons, and it all depends on how each person feels about nursing. Some will like nursing a lot, others will be in the middle, while others will see it as a way to pay the bills. So, their opinions will be driven by their overall experience and motivation. Don't base your decision on what others say. It really depends on you, your desire to care of others, your willingness to work some hard hours and be challenged, and whether you are willing to sacrifice the time to get your degree. Nursing school is not easy.

Think about your personality, and what type of nursing will fit you. Whatever you choose do you, your primary responsibility will be patient care. Can you see yourself doing that? Nursing can be very demanding yet satisfying, especially when you work with acute to critically ill patients or when a family member says "thank-you." The flip side is having a demanding patient or family member, as illnesses sometimes bring out the worst in people, while others are greatful. Can you handle those kinds of people?

I suggest you do your research, have face to face conversations with nurses and shadow one to get a true understanding of what a typical day looks like. Go to a medical-surgical floor. If allowed, visit other units....ICU, ER, Psych, etc. This is the best exposure. Doing this will help you to decide if nursing is for you and what type of nursing you would enjoy doing, and it helps you to decide if spending all that money and time on your education will be worth it. Good luck.

If it is in your heart when u say that u "have always regretted not going to nursing school", then I say DO IT! I have recently retired from a 49 yr career in nursing & I have always said it was the hardest & best thing I ever did. Hardest because there is a LOT of physical labor. However, it was my life! I raised & paid for a family by myself because i was a nurse. I never worried @ a job - there was always one there. There is the wonderfulness of caring for people that not many have. Who can say that their days are full of many, many emotions like a nurse can? Of course, there are rules & time limits in the job & some days are better than others. But the feeling of self-worth and satisfaction of helping others thru their worst of times can never be taken away. It is so hard to really articulate. But I believe if you think you have it in you - you should try. I am so glad that God put me on the path of nursing - I would never change any of it!

I think there is a great career in the field of nursing. You may join certified nursing assistant classes to get a bright and safe future in nursing. There are a lot of schools which provide regular or online cna training.

If you already made your plan, it means that you are in the truck. No matter what other people think, it is what you really want. Ask your self if it is your dream. Picture yourself as a nurse, if in that picture is you. then the answer is yours. Good luck

nursing is a great profession and a respectable one. Growth in the field is not an issue. However, be ready to work hard under pressure. Everything comes at a price. Its not an easy job but is surely a profession which give immense satisfaction. So go for it only if you have an inclination to help others. As far as growth is concerned check out the websites which provide statistics about past and future projections. Hope this helps.

Well, it's not bad if you proceed another degree for your sake.

    Samara,

Not one job will have all positive reviews because the profession isn't for everyone. If you are personable, willing to work with different populations, have the ability to work fast, and others then nursing is for you. If you are interested, go for it! Many people have a degree and then decide to pursue a second one, even if it's in a completely different field. One suggestion I would make is to do a job shadow of some sort to decide if nursing is really for you. If you make a connection or speak with a nurse they can give you the inside scoop, the pros and cons, and help you decide whether nursing is for you and, if so, which department is best. Good luck!

Jonathantrott had 6 posts. They all sell healthcampus.com. I believe this is a violation of the TOS.
Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts."

I would say that nursing is a great career choice and I too went through this where I had by Bachelor's in one area and went on to pursue nursing as it is not only a fulfilling career path but there is a lot of flexibility within the field. I hope that you find the career path that is right for you but I don't think that any person who choose to be a nurse regretted it. Best of Luck!
