    Angry RN with Critical Care Experience

    Hi:
    Do you know that I have been looking for a job for 2.5 years. I have 8+ years of experience. Employers are saying they need recent experience. My education and experience have not abandoned me. Then I'll read captions like we have a shortage of nurses, who writes these articles anyway? where are they getting their information? I even thought of going to complete the masters in nursing, then I ask myself, will I be able to get a job then? Maybe I should care careers at this time.

    Default RN with Critical Care Experience

    Critical-care nursing is that specialty nursing that deals specifically with human responses to life-threatening problems. A critical-care nurse is a licensed professional nurse who is responsible for ensuring that all critically ill patients and their families receive optimal care. Although very sick and complex patients have always existed the concept of critical care is relatively modern. As advances have been made in medicine and technology, patient care has become much more complex. What is the purpose of this post? I already completed critical care training whereas I have worked in CTICU,SICU,CCU. I
    am well aware of the type of patient population in the area. The predicament that is placed in front of me is harnessing a job for 3 years. Maybe you have been working continuously for a long time so you may not be aware of what is going on in our economy. Many of us educated ones are not being hired. I could tell you the many reasons why this type of economy is advantageous to employers among other things,, but i needed to know the purpose of your post.

    Gold Dust,

    You aren't alone in your struggles to find a job. Many nurses like you struggle but it is important not to give up. Especially in tight times, employers may turn to newer nurses they can pay less than you. Ultimately, experience will help you receive a quality job. It may be difficult to digest, but keep plugging along.

    My name is Courtney Schnetzer, and I am currently a junior in my nursing program. I am very interested in becoming a critical care nurse after graduation. I do not know much about this aspect of nursing except for what I see in movies and on the television. We do not specifically have a clinical for this. If anyone could give me any insight on what the daily challenges/responsibilities of a critical nurse are I would really appreciate feedback. This will aid me in my decision on which path to follow. Thank you!

    Courtney;
    Realistically, dont worry too much about where you're going to work after graduation. You'll be lucky to get a job as a new grad, so take any job you can get. Concentrate on learning organizational skills and seeing "the big picture" about your patient, no matter where you work. If you want to do ICU then preferably go to a floor with telemetry. Talk to people- find out if you can job shadow an ICU nurse for one shift, because you really have no idea what its like until you're doing it. Good luck. It's impt to have goals, but you have to be realistic too - and I doubt that you will be able to pick a job in your area of choice in these times. Also, work as a tech, a CNA, something nursing-related while in school. It annoys me to precept new grads who have never done anything in a hospital before - we preceptors can tell quickly who only has learned from a book. Experience is everything. Good luck!!

    Do to the economy I have heard of several individuals having difficulty obtaining jobs. I would recommend continuing to put applications out and don't give up hope. It will happen when its suppose to. I know this doesn't pay the bills though. If you want to go back to school, go for it - further education never hurt anyone.
