    Cool Spencerian college-shame on you

As a single mother of three children, I knew I had to continue my education in order to provide for my babies. I applied at Spencerian last June and started my journey on becoming an R.N. What I witness from the adjusting exams, teaching backward from the book, testing students on chapters that wasnt covered yet etc..let me just say that I m a person that comes with peace and believe you treat other people the way you want to be treated. My purpose of this post is to let other students know before they go to this school. Everything I say is my opinion. Now make long story short I was kicked out after they said I failed two classes. I m not perfect and if I fail I will be the first to accept it and move on. I have evidence that showed my exam was adjusted. You see in the handbook if you fail two classes your out of the program. The sad part is in the begin of the quarter we have an exam each week and the test scores are adjusted base on the class as a whole then u have to make at least an 78 to pass so what I think happens is my class size was 30students so after the first two exams if u are not passing they tell you to withdraw that way on your transcrit it show a W as you withdraw instead of wf. which is withdraw fail. If anyone does go to this school don't let the teachers b.s. Ya. I hope this blog help someone.

((I walk by faith and not by sight and I pray that the word get out to protect other students

School's nursing program on life support

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A local college has received a failing grade from the state. Students in Spencerian College's Registered Nursing program say they paid more than $20,000 in tuition, but got teachers who didn't teach and administrators that ignored their pleas for help.

At Spencerian College on Dixie Highway, some students in the Registered Nursing program feel like they're the last thing teachers are focused on. One student who asked not to be identified because she is still in school, said she had a teacher that regularly took calls on her cell phone in the middle of lectures.

"She tells us, ‘hold on I have to take this,'" the student said. "And she gives us 20 minute breaks, hour breaks, we've even sat there three hours and talked amongst each other complaining about, ok what are we learning here?"

That student, who told us Spencerian has a no phone policy, said even when that teacher wasn't on the phone, she wasn't concentrating. At one point, teaching from the wrong text book.

"It was about two weeks before she realized that we were in a different book," the student said.

Monica Hall, was also in the Registered Nursing program, but had to withdraw this semester because she failed a class.

"I think it was their fault," said Hall. "We weren't taught anything."

Hall said students complained about teachers to school administrators in emails and letters. But she says the Director of Nursing ignored them."

"He said this is what I think of these emails and he tore them both up," said Hall. "And he told us that if we complained any more we would be put out of the program."

The students also complained to the Kentucky Board of Nursing, which told us Spencerian has had problems for years. In 2006, the board tried to shut down Spencerian's Registered Nursing program because of poor test scores. In February 2010, the board placed Spencerian on probation, citing poor teachers, curriculum, and the below average test scores. Last year, 19% of Spencerian's registered nursing graduates failed the licensing exam on the first try. The maximum allowed by the state is a 15% fail rate.

Nathan Goldman, general counsel for the Board of Nursing, said students, most of whom paid more than $20,000 in tuition to Spencerian for the R.N. program, are unlikely to get that money back if they can't pass the licensing exam.

"Well, they can take the exam several times if they want and they can do other things after they've graduated," Goldman said. "But yeah, it could be a problem."

Grover Potts, Jr., an attorney with Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, LLP, the law firm representing Spencerian, told us the Kentucky Board of Nursing is singling out Spencerian because it's a for profit school.

"I don't have a question in my mind that the board of nursing is not treating Spencerian fairly," said Potts.

According to Potts, two other state nursing schools had worse failure rates on the licensing exam than Spencerian. He also says the college is under new management and trying to improve. About the complaints from the Spencerian students we talked to, Potts called them sour grapes.

"There are going to be disgruntled students no matter what type of institution you have," Potts said.

But the student we spoke with who asked not to be identified, a 29-year-old single mother of two, said she is on track to graduate from Spencerian in June. She just doesn't someone else to go through the struggles she did.

"And I regret it every day I walk into that school," the student said of the decision to enroll in Spencerian, a school of higher learning, where some students say the only lesson, is to be careful what you get yourself into.

On April 15, Spencerian will contest being put on probation at Kentucky Board of Nursing's monthly meeting. If the probation is upheld, the school will not be allowed to accept new registered nursing students. If things have not gotten better in a year, the board could shut down Spencerian's R.N. program all together.

I'm passing all my classes with a B but not because their teaching but because of good outside help maybe i should be paying then the 20,000! so in saying that would Mr.Potts say I'm

Well I have to say that I am posting on this forum to make anyone that is going to go to Spencerian College in Louisville, KY in ANY of the nursing programs aware of what it is you're going to be in for! I am currently going there and if, by the sheer grace of God, I get out of there with any dignity at all intact, it will be a blessing. The director of the nursing program is a pompous, out-of-control, ego-maniacal male who I truly believe has borderline personality disorder with a narcisstic complex. He's like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, charging into classrooms, cussing students with every breath, threatening to kick them out of the program if they so much as even deign to disagree with him in any way. He hates anyone who isn't white. If you're gay or overweight, be ready to bear the brunt of his disdain as well. The good news is, if you are thin, blonde (whether naturally or from a bottle), and bat your eyelashes at him and wear a low-cut, tight blouse, you will be shown great favor, especially, according to the many rumors, if you do any favors for him (wink wink!!). My sympathies and condolences go out to his wife! I witness this behavior on a a near-daily basis when I am on campus and he is there. He has a male asssistant director of nursing and a female clinical coordinator who are both literally Gestapo-ish in their actions, following him into the classrooms to reinforce whatever it is that is being said is followed through with and ready to confront you in the event that you even look like you are going to even think about disagreeing with whatever it is that is going down. I am a grown, adult student who returned to school after many years to follow a dream to be a nurse. I really don't have an issue about the program, the curriculum or any of my training, but this madness that I have just described, I will not miss when I finally get out of there. I paid this "institution" too much to be subjected to the abuse that I and fellow classmates and students have endured under the "leadership" of this man and his henchmen. The dean refuses to do anything about him because he just championed their cause to the Kentucky Board of Nursing to get their RN Program back because they lost it in 2010 and getting it back means that there will be even more revenue generated for the college. Right now, this man believes himself to be invincible. I have not at this time made any sort of a formal complaint to anyone becuase I refuse to be targeted by this group and get kicked out of the program and forfeit all of the good, hard work that I have done and all that I have accomplished. There will be a day of reckoning for these people because I will speak out about this, all in good time!! What goes around, comes around, as the old saying goes. They are their own worst enemy. Thanks for letting me vent and I welcome any and all opinions on this subject.

Unhappy I had a problem with a teacher Mrs Faith Yount

She was very mean told everyone to shut up and would sometimes not even teach us. She was rude adn even got into it with a student i didnt know the students name but it was totally uncalled for. The school is very unprofessional and they dont treat the students very well for the amount of money we pay. It is horriable that we only get 2 tries a class maybe some of us have learing problems or something that we dont know about. Some have work and kids and by the time we get to class we are so tired that you cant help but not to doze off. You try your best and i think only getting 2 tries is not fair.I think if you fail the 2nd time they should make you take a special tutor class on Saturday plus let you make it up for a 3rd time. That would help alot of other students to pass and alot of the students that didnt get to pass another chance. These people have lost there hopes, and dreams! No one should have to be turned away from theres dreams or from an education.Even as a child or as an adult wanting to learn no one!Evertone in America should be able to go to school and get an education for themsleves and there family if they are willing to put in the effort! This is the land of the free but, we only get 2 tries and we get treated bad, then we have all kinds of aid money to pay back.

Lightbulb What a sorry waste of time in a sorry school

After going to Spencerian for three quarters I have to say I am worse off than before I started. Teachers their cannot pronounce words as simple as Glucose and cannot answer the simplest of questions that even a basic Anatomy teacher could answer. They sit in rooms and talk bad about their students with other students as well as their coworkers. God help you if you are not 150 pounds, blonde, and tall as far as our DON whose license is under investigation is concerned. If you are you can be 2 hours late for clinicals and nothing will come of it, if not they will fail you for being 10 minutes late. Students cannot do simple math problems and the solution there is to fail them instead of wondering what the problem is. Sometimes whole classes after the third try on a 10 question test. Thank god I had a real teacher to teach me math or I might have been a victim of stupidity too. Favoritism is the main subject their not nursing. People that cannot wrap their feeble minds around the simplest of subjects are still attending. Maybe because they are sleeping with the sorry waste of skin in the office. I hope to god I never get sick in Kentucky. The board of nursing knew exactly what they where doing when they took the RN program probably saving many lives. I paid 30 grand to hear everyone I come across laughing at me and shake their heads. Spencerian? I never thought someone like you would go their? SO TRUE! I sure wish I could go back in time and fix the mistake I made when I signed up there. What a waste of time and money. Even tho I am still enrolled and in fourth and last quarter I am seriously debating just going to a real school and saving what shred of my reputation among my co-workers is left and probably 7-8 grand. When you go to talk to the DON all you hear is let downs and verbal abuse. Having the nerve to tell me I was the problem? I have news that is my only problem, the problem of going to a sorry assed school like that. The most unprofessional school I have ever seen. I have talked to many people that have paid 5 grand for school in which they where showed more courtesy. At least the teachers/head of programs act like they have some kind of education instead of coming from a trailer in the Kentucky backwoods. Verbal abuse is key there if that is what you like sign up! The head of the program will call you out in front of a full class room and tell you "How stupid you are" even if you are the only one in the class passing. They don't like it if you are smarter than the people they find to hire that cannot even pronounce Glucose, blows my mind! If you have a shred of class/dignity/care about your education, go anywhere in Louisville except their. I have many friends that are nurses and have talked to several more about school. Don't be a laughing stalk! It feels so small when you pay so much thinking you will be treated with respect and professionalism and you have to deal with trash every day! After all if you could stick it out, could get through, do you want everyone you work with wondering if you where the one sleeping with the old man in the office? That's how bad you play with your reputation when sign up for this school! Who wants taken care of by someone like that? Who wants to work with them? Don't be a nobody.

This school Spencerian takes peoples aide money. They have teacher who are not certifed to teach. They have rude teachers. They let students cuss, gossip and be loud during lectures. This place is Hell for learning i can not focus in the place. It is horriable none of there programs are certified. You wont be able to find a job. And if you get Mrs. Faith Yount you can expect to fail every time even if you turn all work in and make good grades. She makes you stay until 10 pm. Its horriable the tuititon is 3,000 a month which the have no problems billing me for but, wont address any issues with me in regaring the students cheating or teachers. Im tired of it. And just try going to either of the Deans it wont get you any were they are No help what so ever. I hope they get sued for every penny they have. Carma's a B----.
