Im a newly graduated nurse in Sydney, Australia who is doing a training year in the Peri-operative environment. Ive started in PACU, and then i will rotate through anaesthetics, scrub and scout roles. At the moment I am mentored by a Clinical Nurse Specialist of 15 years experience.
I sometimes feel that I am expected to know a lot more about the little details regarding body processes that are specific to Peri-op, especially drug metabolism and effects of anaesthetic agents. While the clinical elective for peri-op at university was only 4 weeks ("a very brief introduction" was what we were told) are we erxpected to know all these things early on, or is my mentor forgetting the fact he is a specialist with lots of experieince and post grad training?
What do you consider an acceptable level of knowledge/skill for a newly graduated nurse?
