Hi all!
Recently started working in a small ambulatory surgicenter after working MANY years in main operating rooms. The main cases in this facility are eyes, oculo-plastics, podiatry, plastics, minimal gyne( rarely any instrument count cases). Count policies are being reviewed. Does your facility do sponge counts on oculo-plastic or eyes, etc? When doing bilateral upper/lower lid procedures, do you do a closing count for each lid, or what? I've checked AORN's Standards and Recommended Practices-Practice #1 sponges should be counted on all procedures in which the possibility exists that a sponge could be retained( in oculo-plastics the raytec is larger than the pt's,eye, therefore does it still need to be counted)? Thanks for any and all responses.
