No one wants to pay what I am supposed to be getting in lieu of my experience.
BUT, no one asks me what pay I would accept!!! For a half-decent position, with happy and content co-workers, and (is it possible?) a human, sane Administration, you would be surprised at the pay cut that I would go for!!! No such job!!!! And, when I am lucky enough to get a night or two with a staffing agency, (I now work Rehab/LTC), the staff LPN's and RN's are the nastiest, meanest suckers I have ever had the misfortune to meet, let alone work 8 hrs. with them!!!!
All young, they act like anyone over 40 is ancient!!!And,... VERY STUPID!!!! And, just a major annoyance to them!!!! What the H___ have we done to THEM!!! We're Agency Nurses,...not out for their jobs,...not there to make them appear inadequate in any way!!! All I want to do is be a nurse!!!!!!!! I love my chosen career, but I haven't met anyone I would want to work with, anyplace I would like to work or any Administration that wouldn't set me on fire in a fast second!!!! Crazy, looney tune frustrated SOB's are all I come into contact with, on almost every interview for the past 2-3 yrs.!!!! Then, If I took the position, I end up quiting because if I didn't, and returned to work,...well, lets just say that postal workers that go bananas are mild compared to a VERY angry and frustrated RN!!!!!!!!! I am actually seriously considering leaving Nursing---forever. And, that makes me very, very sad. As I said, I love nursing--talking with my patients, holding a lonely hand, or sitting by someone's bed and just listening...whatever,---as long as I leave her/him feeling a little less lonely, less alone and old, and I have the great chance to see them smile, and say they feel ---even a little better,...then I can go home knowing that I have at least, helped one person that night. I love it!!! Can't get enough! But, no one will let me do it anymore!!! You have no idea how useless I feel !!! After working for 40 yrs., and now with nothing to do---no one to sit with and hopefully, give some comfort. WHY????? Because of money!!! It sickens me---that because of a facilities' "bottom line",...I cannot see my patients---cannot offer a kind word, or a smile, or a hug to someone that might really need it---but, not enough nurses for that anymore!!! Besides, these facilities think they are so smart!!! Use LPN's,---cheaper than RN's and they do the same job!!!! WRONG!!! Oh you tricky, tricky bosses!!!! You think you are so clever and look at all the money you are saving for your multi-million dollar corporate bosses!!!! I was around in the 80's---when the hospitals decided they could do without RN's!!!! Doesn't anyone learn from past mistakes!!!!! The nursing profession lost so many really good nurses then, because they didn't have any choice but to find another career!!! Then, a few years later, its..." Oh---where have all the nurses gone??? What will we do??? ( wringing hands). Well, guess what---I do not have the luxury of retiring, or 'waiting this out'!!!! We cannot eat promises!!! And, PECO doesn't want to hear a nurse say,..." I cannot find a job!!!" No one believes it,...but it is a reality!!! NO JOBS!!!!!! So, I guess I have no choice but to give up and start looking at another " line-of-work".
I never want to hear "Nursing shortage" EVER AGAIN!!! I am disillusioned, very sad, and very disgusted!!! This career was supposed to be "recession-proof" !!!! Oh, be a nurse, you'll ALWAYS have a job!!!!!!!!
What a giant load of BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow you really sound disgruntled. At 60 years old, I am curious to know why are you having trouble finding work? Because of your years of experience as you noted plus an excellent work history you should be highly desirable to any employer. To my understanding, the "nursing shortage" is applicable to a shortage of "experienced" nurses not nurses in general or new nurses. Not to assume anything but if a highly seasoned Registered Nurse is having great difficulty finding and/or keeping a job, I can almost bet it's not because of lack of opportunities.

Vermont and NH hire new grads. Check the hospital listings and see who is hiring.... I think VT starts at about $24 hr. not bad..
Florida hires new grads.... Fl. licensure takes a month, Vt easy - NH- takes at least 2 weeks.. but, one would get job first then apply for license.

I used to live in the US, when you have no experience, it's so easy to get a job but when you have a lot of experience sometimes it's harder.

    2. US "import" foreign nurses because of many reasons (we will talk about it in another post) but one of them is because US nurses are not going WHERE are nursing positions open and they are not going there NOT because they don't want (each american new grad nurse that I knew WANT to work) but dosen't know where to go and they don't know because the places in NEED for nurses are HIDDEN, because there will "land" foreign nurses and someone will make BIG MONEY bring foreign nurses in US.

Now where foreign nurses land, where are hidden places????

Go and google it....each "bad" area in US, areas with high crimes, flood, deserts, poor areas, top of mountains, isolated cities...are the places. Many of you will be FORGIVEN by your school debts if you will go to work there or you will receive additional money at hirring. I will search for you links with that areas.

You are americans, you can do it, search the places and be an american nurse, is an honor! Love you tons!
Awe! Thanks! Man, in the place where I work, foreign nurses get housing allowance and not U.S. citizens or green-card holders. I don't know why though. I mean, some of us who don't get are renting too and that extra money would really help us U.S. citizens/green-card holders. Do you know how much they get? Single- $600 and Married -$800/month.

Then, when finally someone from a higher position suggested that everyone should get $500/month housing allowance -even including U.S. citizens and permanent residents; foreign nurses weren't happy about that because their housing allowance will get lower. *sigh* This is how we (U.S. citizens & green-card holders nursing staff) are treated in a U.S. territory. How sad...

OH Giselle... IT IS A SOO TWISTED TRUTH!!! Better IS A LIE!

Let's clarify! House allowance as much as I know is given FOR TRAVEL NURSES. And it doesn't matter if are Americans or foreigners. If you are TRAVEL nurse you will receive house allowance.

You could NOT receive house allowance because are DIFFERENT gov programs for the ones who settle up in undeserved areas.

Instead to hate aliens, be proactive and GOOGLE IT, fed and provincial programs for nurses in underservead areas.

After couple of months if you want house allowance and it is your "nursing dream" to have house allowance, go and travel!

If i would be you, I would settel up somewhere and take the opportunities for that area... because YOU ARE AMERICAN!

AMERICAN NURSES are smart with big opportunities if are not hateful....

You can't hold the cake and eat it too, lol. But you could have some cookies instead, homemade, delicious and less fat than a cake, lol.

Think open...hate and discrimination hide good judgement and IS NOT TRUE AMERICAN, is American twist! Hugs Tons!
The GOD is NOT money, but IS YOU OWN, and you are not neither for sell and neither for buy, but YOU ARE!
