    Default Rn coder/auditor

I am an rn with a background in emergency care and currently an endoscopy nurse. While i love my job, i am interested in rn-coder/auditor. My local community college has a program for coding that is backed by the ahima, but is that all i need to be a rn-coder/auditor? I need some guidance on what the process is to get certified.

I have also wondered about RN Coding as a career.

It's great if the school is backed by ahima. AAPC has a new certification for auditors.

There definitely are opportunities for nurse coders, but all that I am seeing requires you to be certified. I heard of some nurses acquiring coding how to manuels and teach theirselves if they didn't have the money. Internship would probably be the best way to go initially. Planning on taking ccs exam from ahima in August. AAPC let's you retake your test for free, so I hope that I past. Took RN-Coder about 2 years ago.

I have a 22 year RN background in ER and have thought about getting into coding as well...Im just not sure where to get the best training. I noticed that you mentioned rn-coder/auditor training and thought you may have looked into the AACCA as well ??? I just discovered this site and was wondering if it is a good program. Thanks

I am a ADN nurse with the Clinical Nurse Coder and Clinical Nurse Auditor certificates. I have found it difficult to find a position in this field in the North Seattle area. One thing that I've found hindering me is the fact that I don't have a BSN. I have over 20 years nursing experience though. The term Clinical Nurse Coder or Auditor isn't even used around here. A similar position would be a Clinical Documentation Specialist.

    Good luck.
