Old Nursing School Pins

I'm not sure what column to but this in but since it doesn't have to do with direct patient care etc, I'll put it here.
I'm starting to collect Nursing school pins. Does anyone know any reference book or magazine that I can use to check the names of pins and what they look like? I have emailed the American Assoc of Nursing History and they don't have anything. I know that back in the 80's RN magazine's cover every December had pin's on the cover but I can't even find a place to find those covers. I am particularly interested in the hospital school pins, especially the pins from the hospital's where the school's are now closed.

I have purchased a pin that is a small rectangle with JBH around the top with a side chain that says "49 at the end.I presume that it means they graduated in 1949 but I don't know the name or location of the school.

Any ideas would help

The Origin of the Japan Baptist Hospital
We need to return February 1946 to trace the origin of the Japan Baptist hospital. It was when Japan was in chaos suffering from poverty and disorder after World War II. A chaplain at the St. Luke's International Hospital�@in Tokyo, which was a US army hospital at that time, having been taken over by the occupational army, visited the Rev. Kiyoki Yuya of Mejirogaoka Church. It was the only remaining Baptist Church in Tokyo at that time. The Chaplain offered to help the Japanese churches to contact churches in America. At that time Japanese were prohibited to correspond with Americans.�@Rev. Yuya wrote a letter to The Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in America for help to evangelize Japan. This was how initial contact was made.

Wow. . .I thought I lost mine long ago. I went to put my wedding rings (I don't wear them all the time, or when at work.) in my jewlery chest, and back in the corner it was. My date of pinning and graduation is engraved on the back. I haven't a clue as to when I wore it last.

Good luck with your search. I'd imagine there are a great many different pins out there.

This has to be a rather expensive hobby, since my pins are all gold. LPN, RN and BS.

And each one is cosiderably smaller than the preceeding pin. LOL

It can be an expensive hobby. I'm only budgeting myself a certain amount of money per month. I spent this months money on the pin from "Oil City Hospital School of Nursing" from Oil City PA. It's oval with a few seed pearls around the edge and a caduceus in the center. There is a side chain with a lamp and "'32" on the lamp. I like the pina that are interesting looking and I've limited myself to hospital nursing schools from the '30's to the '50's. I like the hospital schools because so many of them aren't around anymore and so many of the pins are so unique. When I was in high school I worked at a dime store that was across the street from a large hospital. I got to "pin watch" when I cashiered and I saw some very unique pins. I guess my love of pin's started way back then. Some of the pins aren't that expensive and it's fun to do the research on the school etc. There is one pin I really like on EBay. I've put a bid on it but I have a feeling that it will go for quite a bit more than I can afford. Maybe if I cross my fingers and toes nobody else will notice it and I can buy it cheap.

Instead of collecting the pins why don't you have people take a picture of their pin and send you a copy with information on the school, what year they graduated, etc. Maybe start a website where nurses can send in the information and pictures of their uniforms, caps, etc and others can use it for reference, etc. I wish I had my cap - it yellowed so bad I couldn't clean it and had to throw it away. I notified the school and they don't have them anymore either and none of the companies have anything like it. Sad. Good Luck!
