Do I have any options?

I just failed the first class of my second year in an associates nursing program in IL. I do not know what to do or what my options really are. Can I get my LPN? I have no idea and really feel lost. I want to still pursue my career as a nurse. I did not fail by much. In my program if you fail two tests you are out......I have a B in the class but failed two tests by 1 point!!!!! I am so frustrated and disappointed. PLEASE HELP!!!

Whoa angel that is unfair. You pass the class but you're out of school? Talk to your advisor surely you can make them understand how utterly ridiculous this is. It's like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Even the board of nursing lets you fail NCLEX multiple times and continues to let you test.

Sorry to hear that you're having difficulties. However, you'll have to explain your situation better because it is quite confusing when you say you have a B in this class and yet failed two exams. Doesn't that make your final grade not a B anymore? I agree that the best option for you is to talk to a faculty adviser and figure out what alternatives are available. If this is the first time you failed a course, I think that school is being too ridiculously strict by kicking you out already. And before you speak to anyone, make sure you are familiar with the academic requirements in the program as far as students advancing to the next level as well as provisions for repeating acourse if a student fails one. Knowing what the rules are will help you in defending your case as far as being allowed to stay in that program. Should you be allowed to take the course again, try not to repeat the same mistakes you did the last time. For instance, if you find that you do better with a study partner, try to arrange for one to be available for you.

Some colleges have minimum grades allowed to stay in a specific program. My college aged child has a minimum of a B for certain classes---less than that is considered a failure in that school. (not the entire university.) I personally think that is a good idea. Raise the bar, so to speak.

If you failed a class (failing is failing, no matter if it's by 10 pts or 1 pt--) pick yourself up and start over again. Decide what you want to do, and if it's still nursing, get back in the game, and STUDY MORE. I would tell that to my own kids.

Haven't you had a long talk with your advisor at the school? My school had an instructor who was involved with retention. If a person was identified as close to failing, they were required to meet with this instructor who then worked with the student to keep the student in the program. You should ask if the school will approve your paperwork for the LPN NCLEX so you can work while you are regrouping. Your school should have a policy in place on whether or not they do this. Other than getting an LPN license, the only advice I can give you if you have been dismissed from the program, is to apply again, if allowed, or else start looking at different programs. There were several students at different times in my program who failed a class or had major issues with it. Their advisor usually had them drop out and start the semester over at the beginning of the next semester. Take all of your tests and papers and talk to your advisor. Like someone said, know your schools policy about failing a class etc before you meet with your advisor. When I was in school there was a tenured professor who was notorious for being difficult. Every semester there seemed to be at least one student she failed. The student she failed would start the semester over with a different instructor. We need too many nurses to have someone who is eager, get thrown out of a program for failing a class. If there are any other nursing programs in your area you might start thinking about them too. (especially if your advisor isn't real positive about your chances)

What is the program's policy? In my program if you failed 2 classes you were out and couldn't reapply. So first you need to find out the policy. As for being an LPN, that is always an option but I do know that we were not yet eliglible to sit for the LPN exam after just the first year of the program-ours needed 3 semesters to be eligible. If you find that you are, just apply for the LPN exam.

There must be advisors in the program who can help you through your options. That would be a better bet than us speculating.

I agree that you need to talk with your advisor. Find out what you need to do; retake the class, apply for LPN, transfer to another school, etc, then grit your teeth and do it!
