    Default On My Way Back...

    Good Morning my fellow nurses!
I have been away far too long. I had a serious injury and then my husband developed pulmonary fibrosis and passed almost 3 years ago. With my neck and back injury, I could have gotten caught up in the pills, Dr. Visits, PT and all that, but I made a decision to fight back. I started working out to strengthen my muscles and my mind. Granted, there were times I have wanted to give up, but I , as we all know, have worked too hard for my career to give it up.
I am not employed as of yet. I have been out of the field since 2005. I realize technology has changed , but the human body doesn't. My speciality has always been Oncology. I would rather go into research or education rather than to " hit the floor running", if you can imagine that.
I have always been proud to say that I am an RN, but it doesn't make one feel proud when you don't practice it.
I am a caregiver, it's what I do. I love it, and I look forward to my next adventure. I am open to any suggestions anyone may have for me, and to communicating with you all in the future. God Bless, Sandy

Hi Sandy...I believe you are a very strong woman and I can really feel your passion in being a nurse! I also believe that you have years of experience in this profession, so it will be a good idea if you share it to aspiring nurses, so going into nursing education is probably one of the best things to do! Good luck and I hope all goes well for you!

Lanursing22,Thank you for your kind words!!! They mean so much!!! I am still new learning this site, but like anything, we nurses can jump into anything and make it work!! Lol! Yesterday I was on here helping a new nurse calculate cc's per hour because the nutritionist changed the rate. It was fun, I guess I need to teach, like you said! I did a lot of precepting in my last job, of course, as we all do. As I said before, thank you for your encouragement. My daughter lives in LA... Love the weather there! Good talking with you, Sandy

Hi Sandy. This is my first time on the site. I too and in the same boat as you. I injured my spine and shoulder and have had 7 surgeries plus breast cancer since 2007. I now must deal with constant pain. Yet I am a nurse! Always a nurse! 24/7 all I think about is getting back to actually practicing.
My problem, which may also be yours is the time spam on the résumé. I bit the bullet and went for an interviews for a per-diem position. Can't start after all these years, and still with troubles at permanent hours. The employer never asked, "So where have you been for the last 5 years?". I am sure that definitely had some thing to do with no getting the position. I have been in the filed since 1984. The last 12 years in ICU. So I definitely. Have the experience.
Anyone out there can help here?????
Have you SandyK applied yet? I will not give in to my injuries. I will do this.

Hello Sandy and Dawngri , Welcome back to nursing. I was suggest you both apply for DARS which is a federal program for disabled and injuired workers to help them return to work. They pay for Nurse Refresher Programs or other training that you need to update your skills to return to the field. You could get certifications that are needed as well. Depending on your area they sometimes hire nurses as well. I would also recommend a facility or area of practice where you can be a testimony of recovery like I had a nurse that recovered from a severe accident that was hired by a local rehab hospital and boy does she inspire the patients when she walks in with her special device to hold the items her arm cannot anymore. Also, look for volunteer experiences like an indigent clinic to brush up your skills, network and, assist others.
Good luck to you both on your return to the field you are so passionate about.

Hi, Dawn, Thank you for reply. I did apply at my old job, through Human Resources... I was virtually laughed at.... Horrible way to treat someone. I will suggest something for your pain, though,... And don't laugh... A hematite necklace!! I can't believe my pain in my neck is so much better!,,, and I get nothing for this input...
Back to work, I'm going to talk with my doc and see if he has any suggestions. Also, I am going to volunteer, it may open up a door. In the meantime, I will be helping someone
Best of everything to you!!!! Once a nurse, always a nurse))
