A book has recently been released entitled,"Direceted Care: Showcasing the Expertise of Professional Nurses in Ambulatory Primary Care" to outline an independent role for professional nurses. The book brings health care consumers to the forefront and proposes that the leadership and management skills of professional nurses be engaged for more effective daily health management and efficient navigation through the health care system. Health care cost containment is addressed from the stance of mapping out a health monitoring plan encompassing preventive and chronic care need with health care consumers. A Summary Health Care Record is promoted to consolidate the location of health data and to simplify its review by using a systematic, universal format. In addition, the expertise of professional nurses is promoted to influence change in health risks and less effective health care service utilization. Ther term health care consumer is used in lieu of the passive term patient to place individuals as a recipient of services within the health care delivery system and thus entitled to full participation in decision making where interactions are expected to be with rather than to or for. The book can be seen on the Barnes and Noble and Amazon websites.
