Back in the Game

I did the unconventional trek. I graduated nursing school, passed NCLEX then took over a year and a half off so I could travel as well as combat a couple of physical issues that would not help me be the best nurse I could be.

I want to go in, but I don't know if a hospital would take me. Anyone ever know or heard of a situation comparable to mine? Any feedback would be appreciated.

This is the first time I have heard of your unusual situation. I wish you well, it seems like you are serious in pursuing this profession. I do hope you will be able to find a job that will be both rewarding and satisfying for you. Maybe you can try home care nursing first? or do volunteer work so that you can gain more experience.

Hi,,I think one year and a half is not that long plus you already passed your NCLEX, so I don't think there will be a problem if you will submit your resume to your prospect employers!! if you are not that confident to practice considering that you stopped for a year and a half,taking trainings might be a good idea,,just to add or refresh your skills! if you'll face rejections once you started applying, don't give up easily! just persist and be positive. I was out of the profession for much longer than you to be with my kids. When I came back, my first job was with a community health center. The experience there was very broad, across many disciplines so it was an ideal way to start back. Just an idea.
View your time away as an asset and your prospective employers will see that side of it. Good luck!

I can't relate to your particular situation. However, I went from med/surg to ICU and am currently working in LTC. With each new setting I felt I overwhelmed and clueless at times. Nursing school gives you the basic building blocks. I think the real knowledge comes from experience. Each new setting requires a nurse to go through the novice-expert cycle. My advice is to just get out there and take it day by day. What you will need to know will be learned. Nurses who have been in the profession for 30 years still learn something new everyday. The best thing I ever learned was to admit when I didn't know or understand something and to always ask questions. Good luck to you
