New Grad desperately seeking medical/surgical experience in NYC
Greetings everyone,
I am a new grad who wants to work on a medical/surgical unit. It is the grassroots of nursing; you learn everything from A-Z. I understand from nurses both in the US and abroad that med-surg experience made their careers successful. The majority of my clinicals were on med-surg units and I had a great experience, while some of my collegues regarded it as miserable. So far, I have BLS, ACLS and PALS certification and I have volunteer experience. Does anyone in the med-surg community know of any hospitals or other medical institutions that are hiring new grads in the NYC area? So far, I have applied to hospitals in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island. Everyone wants expereince, at least 2 years. I have been on this journey for 9 months! All suggestions are welcomed.
Hi Triage,
I am sorry you are having trouble. It is currently an issue especially in the large urban areas. With a BSN other smaller areas would love to have you. Try applying more rural or even a different part of the country. Also, try the military vases or a LTACH as they have great Med Surg units with lots of challenges as well.
Apply for a Nurse Residency Program at hospitals in and around NYC. Your New York Methodist Hosp. has this program as well as others I've checked. You might consider a Nurse Residency Program in Intensive Care also. These programs are offered usually 2x a year but hospitals differ. Just google - nurse residency programs in new york city. Keep up your volunteer work as that says a lot for you. You also might try school nursing, volunteering for the Red Cross in nursing, or volunteer work at a charity clinic.
