Hello...recent Master's Grad here and looking to get back into employment

Hi everyone,

I am a registered nurse since 2005 and most of my experience is in the Emergency Dept. I have a little bit of med surg, rehab, and mother baby as well in there, but by far and large, I have done mostly ER, both as employee of our local hospital and as agency.

I just obtained my MSN this last summer and am now finding myself in the position of needing to get back to work. My family really needs the extra money, but the problem is that since our son was born back in 2007, I haven't worked very much at all. My certifications are all up to date, and I am not looking for full-time.

However, I am very interested in part-time, per diem employment in any of the following areas of specialty:

School Nurse
Clinic
Home Care
Hospice
ER
Critical Care

Most of these specialties are ones I haven't done much in, and am a bit at a loss as to how I can go about breaking into these specialties.

Hence, why I have come here hoping to get viable advice from those most versed in the industry.

How about applying for some of these positions that you mention and see what happens. Get your resume updated and cross your fingers. That's what the rest of us do.

I have done this and am continuing to do this. It was my hope that there would be other nurses on here in a similar predicament who could pass on some of their wisdom. I am finding that without having had any experience in the past year, despite the fact I just got my Masters Degree, employers aren't willing to even give the time of day. It's very frustrating!

The problem may not be you but the state of the economy and the fact the nursing schools keep pumping out graduate nurses causing a glut of nurses. You may need to consider applying for positions outside of your community or state.

My Filipino nurse friend is experiencing the same thing. Despite her great credentials she still cannot find a nursing job. She wants to go abroad but of course you need experience in that field. So for now to earn some money she decided to work at a call center agency until such time that the applications she passed will be answered by a hospital. She does volunteer week on her days off in a local community health center near her area so that she will not forget some of the nursing procedures that she learned in school.
