Welcome ayimam!
I would ALWAYS start with your state college system. Think of the colleges in your state that are accredidated through MD.
Take some time to research online to see if they offer the RN to BSN option online. Most colleges do, if not all.
Then compare the tuition rates, etc. Email the contact person of your desired choices, an unofficial copy of your transcript.
With that said, if you have received your RN from a community college, speak to your advisor of your program or the university transfer personal of the community college you received your degree from. This is important because most community colleges have a 2 plus 2 agreement with the state universities in its states, making the transition, in your case, RN to BSN smooth and gurantees that your credits will transfer. You can also get that information online through the community college website. Take some time when you are not working, etc. to go in person to clear up the communication. The advisor(s) will be glad to help you make the transition and file for financial aide.
On the same note, apply the above mentioned steps if you have thought about attending a college in another state. But what ever you do, stick with the state universities of that state. For example, if you always wanted to go to the University of North Carolina, type "UNC Online" into your serach engine. Or "NYU online", "New Jersey University online", etc.
This step will ensure that you will get your degree from a nationally recognized and accredited university. Try to stay away from online schools that are constantly advertised like Devry and the like.
Good look with your search. Above all, stay local or go "state side" to be safe. Always make sure that you check their accredidation, and if you are looking out side of MD, contact that state community college. Go to their website, click "potential students", click a link similar to "university transfer", then check out the states universities and colleges to help guide your search that offers the RN to BSN program online.
I'm in CA. Do you know about excelsior.edu ? Is it accept in CA or not ?
I want to go to excelsior.edu because I already have master degree from Russia and I'm looking for universities or colleges who will be accepted most of subjects from my Russian diplomas so my education process will be shorter.
UC Davis definitely
against our Russian diplomas,
Phoenex University in CA doesnt have high rating from employers.
What is your recomendations VIday_C ? In my situation.
good luck ayimam67 i hope you'll find a program that would suit your needs.
Nursing wants all of us nurses to have all this fancy expensive education, but nursing is not offering the jobs to pay for this education. They are giving the jobs away to those who have connections. Nursing and nepotism are synonymous. I don't think the American Nurse Association is fighting hard enough to secure educational funding for those of us who do not have the money to pay for all this education. The powers that be in nursing could be doing a much better job than they are doing for the amount of investment both time, blood, sweat and tears and MONEY they want us to commit to. Look at the American medical Association- they have such a strong presence and voice in all the political goings on. Its no wonder the doctors and corporate America are getting what suits them. All this healthcare reform will benefit nursing in terms of jobs - the APN's and the RN's but every tom dick and harry is throwing in all these bills to repeal it, block its full fruition. These are people backed by money and power. and they keep the money and power and the legislation in their corner and they continue to benefit giving them the privileged lifestyle they have come to enjoy and expect. The Hospital associations are in collusion with the private insurance companies-0 they don't want healthcare reform- its too profitable for them, They continue with multimillion dollar salaries and cut nursing jobs to take care of sicker and greater numbers of patients. then god help you liitle nurse if you make a mistake.
most hospitals today prefer BSN degree holders and it is good to get the RN to BSN for your career advancements or specializations...
So, true! When I looked around at my workplace, some nurses are the daughters/sons of fellow nurses here. Then, foreign nurses get housing allowance (single -$600 & married -$800/mo) while U.S. citizens/green-card holders get none. When someone suggested having a $500/mo housing allowance, a petition was started to keep it the same and keep note that foreign nurses are the majority where I live (which is a U.S. territory). No wonder why foreign nurses don't want to apply for permanent residency (green-card holder) status here in the Marianas. That's because if they do, they won't get even a cent on housing allowance or any benefit at all...
how come they're not giving same benefits to american nurses?
That's what some of us are asking but not a lot of people are vocal about their concerns. Then, when someone suggested having a flat rate of maybe $400 or $500/month housing allowance for all nursing staff (including U.S. citizens & green card holders), there were some resistance. Basically, everything stays the same (meaning $0 housing allowance for U.S. citizens and green card holders while foreign nurses -those who don't have a green-card, get either $600 for single or $800/month for married).
Another thing that may be a problem is that majority of the nursing staff here are foreign nurses without a permanent residency status which is why they prefer nothing to be changed than having their housing allowance lowered to include U.S. citizens and green-card holders.
I don't know about you but I believe that everyone should get the same benefits. Unfortunately, when word got out that they might discontinue the housing allowance or lowered to accommodate other nursing staff, a petition was started and the media was brought in to "illustrate" how it was unfair to these dedicated nurses who had received it for last 16 years or more and had to sacrifice a lot by moving overseas from their homeland. I mean, I understand their pain and struggle but the media didn't cover the whole story... What about U.S. citizens and permanent residents who can't afford the sky-rocketing prices for everything? We too rent apartments but I guess our story is not as juicy or dramatic for the media....
They said that there was a law but that law required housing allowance to be provided only up to a maximum of 5 yrs for those off-island hires. If that's the case, how come they are receiving housing allowance more than 5 yrs -even some are getting more than 16 yrs now and still running? Then, if housing allowance are provided for "off-island hires," how come my friend who got hired but had to move from Hawaii didn't get any housing benefit?
These are only a few questions that I had but only a handful of nurses are questioning this situation we have while the rest are indifferent... People say we (U.S. citizens and green-card holders) shouldn't complain because we are "lucky to have status" but I say: Lucky?! Is it luck when we can't afford to pay the rent and get kicked out of our apartments while those who are getting monthly housing allowance can afford decent housing plus power? Now, who's lucky to have a roof on top of their heads?
In Saipan, most decent apartments/houses/condos are priced around $300-500. With the current housing benefit, there still some change that they can spare for power or for other expenses. Unfortunately for the minority in the nursing staff (namely, U.S. citizens or green-card holders), we barely can afford these and have to look for part-time jobs just to tide us by.
Please note that when I mentioned "status" it means U.S. immigration status...
