    This is different for each patient, and different depending on the setting for the patient (home care vs. hospital vs. clinic) but I'd start by making sure the patient knows you are interested in how cancer is affecting their life and see if they want to talk about what they are most worried about. A patient will have to have some trust in the nurse for that to happen. Being reliable, providing factual information, showing compassion, taking time, all are part of trust. My experience is that patients have multiple fears, and none can be addressed until these are fully understood. Fears can be about their families, about the diesase process itself, about finances, about care issues, about the medical system, about energy to deal with treatment, and many other issues.
