My mother (in California) is very ill, very overweight, and on hospice at home. My sister is taking care of her and we all know that she does not have long to live. Recently, a new nurse started helping her. My mom (who by the way is very gullible) asked this new nurse how much time she has to live. The nurse said "probably about one month". Here's my question: Are nurses allowed (by law) to give this type of speculation, and if so, is it common for nurses to say these types of things?
I guess I thought that only a doctor could make these predictions. Maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for your input.

Hi, I am new to this forum and I joined because I am a translator who translates medical documents to English and I have some questions for you that I hope you could help me with and tell me how these things are called in English.

How do you call a document that, as I was told, a patient fills in with nurse's assistance when entering a hospital unit?

Can you "calibrate anesthesia machine"?

Is the term "draining excreta" correct?

As a nurse at Neurosurgery Unit, can you say "I care for Lumbar Drain, External Ventricular Drain and Redon Drains"?

Thanks for all your help.
