RN Refresher-jumping through hoops

Rate this Entry
As a nurse with over 30 years experience, I never thought after four years of not working that I would be required to attend a refresher course in order to get a license in new state. I have been living out of the country for the past four years so have not been working. I have a current license in Virginia but according to the laws in Georgia I must be able to submit current employment records.

So, I have applied for a refresher course to begin in December, 08. There are many criteria which I have worked on while in the states this summer. I tried repeatedly to meet with someone from the refresher course but apparently they do not work during the summer and make no attempt to return calls if they are there. Finally, after two months I was able to reach the person listed as coordinator.

I have completed extensive forms/papers, health exams, immunizaitons up to date, CPR, background check, liability insurance, etc. The emails I receive from the coordinator are less than encouraging, she insists that it's been done too early although I have explained repeatedly that I do not live in the country and will have to make arrangments to be there for the class. I cannot just stop by the school on the way home from the grocery to drop off more paperwork.

I am quite proud of what I've done, feeling as if I'm being efficient but now I'm having second thoughts of whether this woman will block my entrance to the program. My husband suggests I cut my losses and find another program that is willing to work with nurses instead of belittle efforts. The other option would be to actually return to work for three months to get the required employment history.

Thanks for allowing me to vent my frustrations.

I have been out of nursing for 5 yrs ( BSN ). I too have had trouble receiving information regarding refresher programs in IL. In my far west suburban area, they cancelled the program last fall, alas...I am hoping they will restart it for the spring 2009...I'd like to go back to work.
No one returns my calls. It's frustrating. Now I have to look at other area community colleges, $$ out of district fees, longer commute etc.. My background is hospital (med/surg). Everyone wants recent experience,
I can't blame them..I want the refresher & clinical practical.
