60-1 patient to nurse ratio

Rate this Entry
The LTC home I work at is implementing the 60 patients to 1 nurse policy- and I have to work it tonight. I don't want to do it, but until I get another job , I have to. My supervisor is not one to help and I am tempted at this point to make her cover for my lunch. It will mean I get out an hour later but their trying to cut corners at mine and the patient expense and I find it to be unsafe and unfair. I know the state of NJ says its allowable- but would you do it? Would you put your loved one in a facility that carries out this practice. The stress level is high enough at 30 to 1 in the middle of the night- These people don't all sleep. And then med rounds start at 5 and there all waking up. I don't know how I'm going to do this.I 'm going to keep my head up- breathe- and get through it one hour at a time. Whatever time I get out - that's what time I get out.

The nursing home is part of a corporation or is an independent one? You are unionized? What type of financing they took from patients? Who took this decision?

This is an example of the types of "allowable" policies that contribute to nursing burnout syndrome and ultimately the nursing "shortage" due to nurses leaving the profession. I personally do not believe in the nursing shortage anymore. Companies purposefully refuse to "justify" hiring more nurses when they can force current nurses to take up the slack of the lack of staffing. I have had a very difficult time finding a permanent job because of this type of policy and so have quite a few other nurses I know.
