What do you do when a Manager lies and administration supports it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I am new here, but not a new nurse. I am hoping that someone else will know where we can get the help we need. I work at a major teaching hospital in Southern California. As with most hospitals, our facility is feeling the impact of the current economic crisis. We have also recently gone through some major restructuring of our leadership. I would estimate that over 50% of our nursing staff is not happy. Administration flat out does not care about their employees. We've been told that we can "either get on the bus or go elsewhere", "nurses are dispensable" and if we don't like it to go somewhere else. It is so sad because it is a wonderful hospital. Several of our nurses have gone to administration because we have a Nurse Manager who is illegally witholding merit increases and making up her own rules. One nurse was told that no one was getting a merit raise this year due to the budget. Not true. One nurse was told she was not getting her raise because she was clocking in at 6:30. (We start at 6:30) It's OK to clock in at 6:30 on all of the other units. She continually lies and is supported by administation. Then, there is a charge nurse who bullies and picks on staff members. People are afraid if they speak up they will lose their job. She has threatened people that she can fire them and threatened immigration status on a nurse who is here on a work visa. We do not belong to a union. Any words of wisdom from anyone who has had to fight this kind of battle? We need to stop this person before we lose any more good nurses!

This is what I call the law of tolerance. it is sad to see nurses are tolerating these kind of treatments in the workplace. as a career coach I teach nurses to treat their experience, skills and knowledge as a commodity. the sky is the limit when you make up your mind to take control of your nursing career and refuse to tolerate nothing but the best. you do not deserve to be treated in this way despise of the economic downturn. I hope that you make up your mind and take control of your commodity. let me know if you want to talk further emmasoy@nursingshepherd.com

I would be careful using strong language such as lieing. It puts things on the defense. Start documenting and keep a record of things that pertain to you and don't worry about others. Do your job with the skill and grace it sounds like you have. If you are doing everything as you were taught there can no complaints about you.

    Hi DSmithRN,
I used to work at a place just like that, and was recently forced to resign. I feel terrible for you and your fellow nurses that are tolerating this behavior. Managers like this hijack our soul's, and take our spirit away, the very spirit that makes a warm, understanding and compassionate provider. Our patient's need us, but the facility doesn't.

hmmm.... Sounds like a misrepresentation of community responsibility to me. I think you should find somewhere else to work and demand your spirit back! I can't find work in the regional area because of the monopoly my past facility has, but I contacted a travel nurse agency and they are negotiating a part time weekend job for me (Sat & Sun). I am going to open my own sandwich shop in a cute downtown area and once again be free to be my own boss, but also providing the wonderful care to pt.'s that they deserve in a different facility. Good Luck, DSmith, I somehow know that you are better than this and can be proactive for your own career. Oh yeah, I forgot to ask, do they have magnet status? If they do, you should email or call the American Nurses Credentialing Center and tell all, that's what I did. I didn't get on board of their bus so a clinical coordinator threw me under it. I hope this doesn't happen to you, so keep documenting all, it will be your only defense.

Go to EEOC and file a hostile work environment complaint or speak with an Employment lawyer. Do keep documenting for your self. I hate that some admins have nurses with their backs against the wall. Do not stay out of fear. If you can, do your work well, take really good care of your patients and keep your eyes open for a new job.

HHmmm, sounds like our manager. She has created a hostile work environment, we have gone as a group to administration but they just told her what was said and now she accuses us of trying to get her fired and has made things worse. Administration backs her because she is so good with the budget that she acts like it is coming out of her own pocket. We are changing our mode of practice to "family centered" (better known as do more with less staff) and she will not listen to any staff input all the while the hospital is going on "the magnet journey"
