Connie Kerins, RN reports by cell phone:
“We drove furiously on Thursday [1/23] in order to get to the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee before closing time.” This is the site of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination." [ March of 1968]
“We realized that we were not going to make it on time. Someone on the bus called and told them who we were. A staff person agreed to keep it open just for us. We got there at 8pm and it was a deeply moving experience. The motel still looked like a motel. It was freaky and disturbing to see.”
Kerins told me that, “The room where Dr. King had stayed was lit up but the rest of the motel had been gutted and converted into the American Civil Rights Museum.”
