HCAHPS will force all nurses to keep patients happy !

Rate this Entry
Press Ganey Associates , a leading company that evaluates and specializes in health care performance improvement , has done a research stating that nurse-patient relationship determines the real time care experience at the facility and has a huge impact on patient satisfaction. All nurses must be part of an infrastructure which is actually built for all nurses facilitating them in training and education resulting in more powerful nurses for greater patient satisfaction in the facility.
Yes i am talking about the patients care and satisfaction in the medical facilities in presence of all nurses. Why the patient’s satisfaction is becoming more important? Because of the pay-for -performance system designed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). One parameter of this system is patient satisfaction. The method to implement these types of systems is surveys. Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) is a survey for the patients to describe the levels of satisfaction in their specific medical facility or hospital. This step, use of HCAHPS will put great pressure on all nurses’ working day & night efficiently giving everything for the best patient care and satisfaction. Nurses are the most responsible because they have almost every important duty to carry and they are considered the back bone of the whole patient care system. Also nurses spend most of their time with patients so they can better judge the view of patient regarding the treatment and their satisfaction about all other things related to the treatment.
This enormous pressure of keeping patients all the time happy will make all nurses responsible for doing everything to keep patient happy in order to get good response of satisfaction. Moreover the input by patients on treatment and care quality will determine the best places for patients where all nurses and other staff is just best.

This is so contrary to one of first things we are taught in our nursing courses You can not be everything to the the patient. The nurse's role is not to make the patient dependant on the nurse but to move the patient to independently care for them self. These patient satisfaction surveys do not make patient's responsible for their own care and health, hense blowing apart the entire premise of the current movement toward Preventative, Primary Health care. I does nothing but reinforce-" I feel sick give me a pill, I must be cured now." But them we all know to whose advantage it is to keep healthcare in the acute care mindset- Hospital CEO's. Keeping patients uninsured and underinsure keeps them comingto the hospital with multiple cor morbidites and more complexly ill thus needing more complex, expensive ACUTE care treatment modalities.( hospitals get more reinbursement with patients on dialysis than they do with a patient on Lopressor)

At what point are we going to be honest with our patients and encourage independence. I agree with OldntiredRN. Our management spends a lot of time appeasing our families and patients, by telling them what they want to hear- instead of what they NEED to hear. Our job is that of a role model, an advisor, educator, advocate, providing great customer service as we attempt to do these days... with fewer resources, time and staff. No wonder we are struggling to find quality nurses, to remain in the profession.
