Nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, lactation consultants and more invited

(January 30, 2012) CHICAGO – On March 1 and 2, the Perinatal Nursing Advisory Council and the March of Dimes will once again welcome nearly 400 nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, health educators, lactation consultants and more to its annual perinatal nursing conference now in its 37th year.

The March of Dimes 37th Annual Perinatal Nursing Conference: “Moms, Babies & You” will take place at a new location, the Wyndham-Lisle Hotel, 3000 Warrenville Road in west suburban Lisle. All healthcare professionals caring for moms and babies are urged to attend to learn significant and challenging areas of current perinatal nursing practice.

More than 20 nationally recognized perinatal and health experts will present on topics related to perinatal nursing as a profession today, societal concerns in relation to maternal and child health, current and future trends in perinatal care delivery and developments in nursing research and practice.

By the end of the two-day conference, experienced professionals will gain further knowledge on: current trends and clinical advances of perinatal nursing practice; societal and professional issues challenging the delivery of perinatal health care; improving quality of care derived from evidence-based practices and discussing nursing research relevant to the comprehensive care of the childbearing family.

The long list of remarkable speakers include Dr. Robin Steinhorn, neonatologist providing practice information on managing respiratory issues in the NICU. Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist Kathleen Simpson will review the quality improvement processes ongoing in the perinatal field. Certified Nurse Midwife Mary Alice Grady will present on CenteringPregnancy®, a group-model of prenatal care. Dr. Peter Weeks and Nurse Patricia Bradley will co-lead a presentation on the timely topic of eliminating elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks gestation. Nancy Maruyama, Co-Executive Director of SIDS of Illinois, will speak on up-to-date information about the prevention of SIDS. Lisa Miller, a Certified Nurse Midwife and lawyer, will present on best practices of fetal monitoring.

A competitive poster session will also debut at this year’s conference. Authors or presenters have applied to conduct viewing sessions and discussions on topics like obstetrics, neonatology, public health and lactation support. A total of 18 posters were accepted into the inaugural session and will be presented during the two-day event.

All Illinois Nurses are required to have 20 hours of Continuing Education for the May 2011 Licensure Renewal. Accreditation applications for up to 13 contact hours have been submitted to the Illinois Nurses Association and 10 CERPs were granted from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners for nurses, nurse midwives, and lactation consultants attending the conference.
