On April 25, 2010, I joined nursing colleagues from across North America at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC to recognize Florence Nightingale’s Centennial with a Commemorative Global Service Celebrating Nursing. With the sun’s rays streaming through the Cathedral’s stained glass window dedicated to Nightingale, we were reminded of her extraordinary contributions not only to modern nursing but to improving health. Nightingale was devoted to improving the public’s health. In ...
Prison really is a revolving door but never seen more clearly then when you work in receiving and release (R&R)...I worked in R&R the other day and saw 30+ inmates that came from several prisons around the state. I heard things like "the last time I was here" and "i wasn't at the other prison long enough to get my___.." Most of the inmates know the prison system and more importantly the prison medical system better then the warden or the chief medical officer. ...
Never posted anything personal before but, feeling a bit overwhelmed today. My granddaughter was diagnosed with Autism. I suspected this or something like it and have been reading and researching but, still sad. Tried to pray but, only tears come right now. Feel like something was stolen from me. Being a nurse doesn't help much right now. Can't even blame something like others say vaccines especially MMR. But, not true in her case. I noticed things right away, she didn't interact like other babies, ...
During normal days, we can always wear whatever apparel we want to wear as long as it is comfortable to wear. According to our activities, we can easily interchange clothes ad appropriate them so we can be assured that our body needs the right covering to set us out of public scrutiny and worst folly. But whenever we get into the hospital and been confined, often times, these rights to privacy are often neglected and just your right to be cured is given enough attention. We are only required to ...
Do you automatically prepare for the hospital when you wake up? Are you often rushing to make things done at work so you can go home early and be able to accomplish your tasks as a mother or father of your family? Know my friend that you are suffering from the symptoms of a disease which we can call as obesity. It is basically a body energy imbalance, wherein fats develop and accumulate in an individual’s body year after year. This is usually caused by overeating, unhealthy diet, and lack of proper ...
Ever wondered how nurses looked like in the early days and how their “habits” or shall we say “uniforms” changed over time? What happened to the nursing cap that looked so cute by the time we have seen them portrayed in the television but now long gone by the coming of the modern medical scrubs? How do these caps look like some centuries ago when the nursing profession was just as young as a toddler? With these questions in mind we are about to dealt with some of the most interesting facts about ...

I can't believe it sometimes...I can handle a full arrest, a patient in status asthmaticis, a patient having an MI and sometimes all at the same time but what overwhelmes me is the trivial or non- life threatening problems we see in the urgent care. In a two hour period I saw approximately 10 patients with a variety of simple conditions but was having trouble getting anything done. Maybe because i wasn't working with my regular partner maybe because my back was hurting?? One guy ...
I graduated my 4th year BSN here in Phil and now I am currently working in a private hospital here in our place for about 3 years already. And I'm planning to go abroad to work there coz I know the income that I'll be getting there as a nurse is much much more bigger than here in our country. I am planning to get married soon but I think my work is more important now than starting a new family. Having a family is not easy so it needs a lot of financial effort to make it ...
Well...As you may or may not know there are as much drug use and abuse in prison as on the street. We see alot of problems associated with the drug trade in prison and the use of drugs. Inmates will get a shipment of drugs in and they will sometimes swallow a few balloons with heroin and or speed just to go back to their dorms and hopefully throw them up or take laxatives to get them to go through fast. Some times the balloons don't come back up and they don't pass through and they start ...
Upon hearing the words “nursing uniform,” a vision of my student nurses’ uniform comes to mind. I vividly remember the color, texture and components of the uniform. It was a light-blue, short-sleeve polyester dress topped with a white apron trimmed in lime green. Regardless of whether you loved or hated the uniform, one thing was certain — we stood out. Kate Shaw and Stephen Timmons, two nurses in the United Kingdom, recently explored the importance of uniforms among nursing students. ...
When people ask me what’s on my mind about nursing these days, my thoughts invariably turn to new graduates and the challenging job market they are facing. The story of Susan is a good example. Susan had a 10-year career as a teacher but always wanted to be a nurse, so when she was getting ready to re-enter the job market after her children started school, she went back to school to realize her lifelong dream. To finance her education, she used all her savings, took out student loans and ...
When you work in a prison you will here "he's having a seizure" a lot. Anytime some one passes out or falls to the ground and shakes a little bit the officers and other inmates say "oh no he's having a seizure". I understand that the officers have very limited medical knowledge so I try to educate them as often as I can. Diabetics with a really low blood sugar will have a seizure. When a person has lack of oxygen to their brain their arms and body may twitch as they are ...
Working with 4000+ men, with multiple health problems like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol not to mention 90% of which have and still use illegal drugs, heroin, meth., and ofcourse pruno (prison made alcohol that often kills or blinds the drinker). You know that working in the urgent care you are going to see your fair share of Chest Pain. These are not the most educated people in the world and anytime they have a little ache or pain they think they need immediate attention. Can ...
Hi fellow nurses, I attended conference last week on Ceravix the new HPV vaccine by GSK. Pharmacist was a great speaker. I am impressed with the depth of the study that they did and not rushing the product out just because a competitor was out there. FYI: Gardasil by Merck is now approved for boys too. Also, great explanations regarding the immunogenicity being the reason for giving the medicine so young. Not because kids are having nor or we encouraging them to have sex that young. But, ...
